Liane Hentscher : 68 Month - A Visual Diary

November 6 - November 29 2003

- 68 Months is an intimate diary by photographer Liane Hentscher, documenting the end of her mother’s life
with dementia.

- The 20 small-scale black and white images in the series are randomly spaced in chronology.

- Together with text narrative the series exemplifies the often confusing pull of family bonds at those times
when we can not stop a certain path unfolding.

- The pictures were not made with a deliberate goal in mind but are the result of a growing instinct for being
absolutely present and conscious for the experiences life throws at her. For Liane there was the need to observe
intensely and express the poignancy of these experiences, how they were impacting her life, and to be able to
understand them if not in the present then at some later date. There were pictures for when she could not find
the words. For the photographer, as in all her work, there is duality in her observations. Strength and delicacy.
Repetition and change. Grief and acceptance.
