“Unveil the Night” juxtaposed the poetry and softness of early evening light reflected on the vast landscapes of the Pacific Northwest with the most vibrant denizens of the modern urban nightlife captured in documentary-style photography. “At first glance this collection is composed of two seemingly unrelated subjects”, states David. “But these images celebrate the beauty, mood and drama of this time of visual metamorphosis. They both deal with the transformative power of the night.” “David is a very successful commercial photographer, with clients like the New York Times Magazine and CBC Radio Canada”, remarks Stefani Peter, owner of AION art gallery. “With this exhibition we support him to share a very personal, intense and maybe provocative aspect of his work.” The pairing of the subject with the photographic medium is chosen carefully. For his black and white landscape photography David uses his trusty Hasselblad, with traditional B&W film stock processed by hand. The limited archival editions of 20 are printed by the artist with archival pigment ink on cotton rag paper. Both subject and process speak of the love for detail and craftsmanship. In contrast, the vibrant and fast-living night-life portraits are photographed using various film stocks and formats, as the situation dictates, and printed as either traditional chromogenic prints or pigment ink on cotton rag. David
was born and raised on Cortes Island, BC in the northern end of
the Gulf of Georgia. Immediately following his graduation at Focal
Point Visual Arts Centre in Vancouver, David was employed as a teaching
assistant to the Full Time Diploma Program and later instructor
at the school. David also assisted many professional photographers,
the highlight being New York photographer Ralph Gibson. After three
years of teaching he left to pursue his own work full time…
