Gabryel's
first solo exhibition at AION (March and April, 2004) showcased
her paintings, soundscapes and installations. In her exquisite
work, she sculpts poetry with ancient meanings and eternal truths
in sweet-smelling beeswax, graphite and gold leaf. She speaks
to feelings of passionate love, yearning and faith. A recurrent
theme is the use of Braille, printed on paper and soaked in
wax before being incorporated into the lyrical paintings.
Accompanying
the wall images in the show were two unique installations. One
was a dark enclosed space, lit by seven glowing spheres. Visitors
were invited to open a secet chest within which the pages of
a ghostly book bound in human hair turned lightly. They were
transported to a timeless world by a soft voice.
On the floor of the gallery, a huge bronze vessel inscribed
with mirrored words was continuously filled with drops of sea
water, collected from different oceans, giving birth to circles
ad infinitum. These in turn were echoed by
the shape of the bronze urn.
A beautifully designed artist’s catalogue of images and
poetry with vellum inserts accompanied the exhibit, and is available
from AION Gallery.
