 Liane Hentscher

Liane Hentscher is a photographer who divides her time between Vancouver and London. After moving to the UK in the late 80s she began shooting bands and musicians and travelled throught Europe for Sounds Magazine. Subsequent clients included the BBC, The Daily Telegraph, VHI, Q Magazine, Universal/Island Records, EMI Records, Capital Records and the CBC.

68 Months
is the name of a series of 20 small-scale black-and-white images shown at AION in November, 2003. The show acted as a visual diary that documented the end of her mother’s life with dementia. The work is about Liane's own rage and loss and the gradual decline, over five long years, of the once-elegant and competent woman who had been her mother.

For the exhibit of her work at AION, the images were randomly spaced in chronology. Together with text narrative, it exemplified the often confusing pull of family bonds at those times when we can not stop a certain path unfolding.

The pictures were not made with a deliberate goal in mind but were the result of a growing instinct for being absolutely present and conscious for the experiences life throws at her. For Liane, there was the need to observe intensely and express the poignancy of these experiences, how they were impacting her life, and to be able to understand them if not in the present then at some later date. There were pictures for when she could not find the words.

For the photographer, as in all her work, there is duality in her observations: Strength and delicacy. Repetition and change. Grief and acceptance.
